About The Position
This is a full-time position, 6 days a week, of training horses and ponies and their adult and child riders in hunter/jumper skills, trail work, and horse shows. This position also includes barn management duties. The person must have excellent management skills, attention to detail, a strong work ethic, positive attitude, and be organized, dependable, and a team player. The ideal candidate must have interest in the well-being of horses, supporting a well-functioning facility, and have great teaching and communication skills with children, parents, and colleagues. Train Horses & Riders: Training duties include creating and administering training programs for up to 10 hunter type horses and ponies and their child and adult riders. Experience in fun equine related activities for children and in teaching stable skills is required. Provide instruction and guidance about horse behavior, grooming, saddling and riding. Supervise Daily Exercise Program: Provide training rides to horses. Devise exercise regimens based on what horses are being trained for and oversees these exercises. Ability to properly lunge, ride and otherwise exercise horses in manner that is safe, fair, and ethical to the horse. Experience evaluating a horse’s health and checking for injuries. Assess and Correct Problematic Behaviors: Responsible to train and maintain horses in excellent ground manners, and correct behavioral issues for which medical explanation has been ruled out. Ensure all tack is properly fitting. Barn Management: Duties may include: Day and night checks monitoring horses for any medical issues, Grooming and tacking up (including booting, wrapping with polo wraps and under bandages, appropriately tacking up each horse per its individual needs. Caring for horses after training sessions (e.g. untacking, rinsing, bathing, hand walking, poulticing, soaking and icing if required). Manage individualized feeding schedule; Mixing feeds and supplements. Oversee turnout schedule and provide hands-on turnout assistance, (booting, blanketing based on horses’ needs and temperature, pest control, etc.)
